La Parque Sabana is considered the doorway to Costa Rica. The park is a popular getaway for Ticos and tourists alike, offering a nearby retreat from the chaotic pace of the city. People come to La Sabana Park to bike and run along the trails, fly kites, feed ducks, and have picnics by the lakes and now... to eco-tour La Sabana on a Segway!
La Parque Sabana is the largest of Costa Rica's urban parks and comes the closest of San José's green spaces to achieving the same function and spirit as New York's Central Park.
The uniqueness of La Parque Sabana is that it was once the location of Costa Rica’s first International airport. Light air traffic and private aircraft continued to use the Sabana location until the early 70s.
The former air terminal was designed by architect Jose María Barrantes, and is a fusion of a Spanish Colonial and more modern purity of line. It was remodeled by architects Jorge Bertheau and Edgar Brenes into what is now the very gracious Museo de Arte Costarricense.
The Museo de Arte Costarricense building is a work of art in itself, and once the terminal of the old airport at the east end of where La Sabana Parque is today. The tour includes time to venture into the art deco museum which houses a permanent display of 3,200 national treasures spanning over the last two centuries.
Viewing the photograph of the tower it is hard to imagine this was once considered the tower for an International Airport.
The Tico people delight in telling the story of President John F. Kennedy’s trip to Costa Rica in 1963 and how his plane actually landed right there by the museum. Every time we tell someone we are going to start our Segway eco-tours in the La Sabana Parque, without fail we hear them proudly recite the story of Kennedy’s visit. With the help of modern technology and Google we were lucky enough to actually find an original photograph of President Kennedy giving his speak to the Tico people at the airport.
Parque La Sabana is a large multifaceted park and home to the Museo de Arte Costarricense, which displays everything from pre-Colombian artifacts to the works of some of Costa Rica's best 19th- and 20th-century artists. The Museo La Salle, or Museum of Natural Sciences, is located in the southeast corner of the park, and is certainly worth a visit. More of a house of oddities than a museum of wildlife, the Museo La Salle features a weird collection of taxidermal curiosities and even a model of a U.S. space shuttle.
La Sabana Parque is also home to a garden of sculptures with works from Francisco Zuniga, Jorge Jimenez and others. Also located within the park are the National Stadium and National Gymnasium where events of all types are held, an Olympic-size swimming pool just west of the gymnasium and in the center of the park there is a large lake and fountain, which is a favorite gathering spot for families.
